Dois tipos de classificação destacam-se como mais adequadas. Na versão de Heckel (1991), a classificação compreende metáforas de transporte são as que fornecem estrutura para a qual o usuário pode conduzir diferentes tipos de problema para o campo de ação e metáforas de familiarização estas se referem àquelas em que os objetos gráficos facilitam o aprendizado de um programa por usuários não experientes.

seguem alguns estilos de interfaces ou metáforas de interação, abaixo temos a classificação de Leite (2008) com a inclusão de interface amigável: i) Interface de linha de comando, ii) Interface com a metáfora da conversação, iii) Interface da linguagem natural, iv) Interface de perguntas e respostas, v) V) Interface com menus, etc. E historicamente, sabemos que o tipo de interface presente no primeiro PC foi a interface de linha de comando, existente em quase todos os sistemas operacionais em suas versões iniciais.
